ACADEMY’S BACKGROUND

Although the “Family Hairdressing, Individual Style” brand called Academy Salons was created by Franco Capozzi and Salv Mule over two decades ago in 2000, you need to look all the way back to 1972 to fully appreciate the progression it has undertaken.

FRANCO’S START

Franco’s italian flare, commitment to excellence and dedication to the art of hairdressing took the Cobham residents by storm that year. Franco’s of Rome, as it was known then, was nurtured by Franco for 13 years before it allowed him to retire in Spain after selling the booming business in 1985.

10 years into his retirement, Franco decided he needed a new challenge. He packed his bags and returned to an area and an industry he knew well. Hersham, Surrey seemed like the perfect area to launch and by the end of 1995, the new salon was up and running.

THE PARTNERSHIP

By 1999, a young talented salon manager at Franco’s former salon in Cobham was ready to be his own boss. The name of this young, talented manager was, of course, Salv Mule.

Salv was equipped with a rare combination of talents. He possessed the brain of a pure entrepreneur who understood his business’ numbers, targets and financial statements while having creativity intelligence to be a respected leader amongst his peers.

Franco’s experience complemented Salv’s ambition and drive; they became the perfect team.

VALUES

By the time they had 3 salons with the opening of Claygate in 2006, Salv faced a recruitment challenge of epic proportions. Although the hairdressers he did hire were good hairdressers, none of them grasped the importance of the business element of their job. Simply hiring creative was not how Salv and Franco set out to develop the Academy Salons brand.

While himself gaining his assessors accreditations, Salv met someone who would also become an integral part of the growth of the business in John Baxter Hill who would become head of development at the academy training academy when it opened in 2013.

THE PROMISE

News of Academy Salons training school spread within the industry like wildfire and the issue of finding talented staff, who understand the ethos and structures of the Academy Salons, became a thing of the past. Franco and Salv could now simply train their own team from their first introduction to hairdressing.

“We don’t advertise,” says Franco, “but people find us.”

The newest member of the Academy Salons family was introduced in Weybridge in 2016. It’s the fifth salon of the group and encouraged Franco to say:

“As long as pampering the client remains the focus – there has to be a balance between expanding and keeping those core values.”
